Description
Tells a joke, which causes nearby non-Hostile people to listen. They can become Loyal, Aligned, Annoyed, or rarely Hostile

Joke is a Special Ability used by the Comedian. Using this ability will cause nearby NPCs within a certain range to approach the user's location to listen to a joke. A few seconds after telling the joke, the NPCs will change their alignment towards the user. NPCs can become Loyal, Aligned, Annoyed, or, rarely, Hostile.

Tips and Strategies[ | ]

  • Take the time to tell jokes to already Loyal NPCs, especially Prisoners, as jokes never fail on Loyal/Aligned NPCs and have a higher chance to recruit.
  • Avoid telling jokes to Vendors before purchasing their goods, as jokes are just as likely to make an NPC give a discount as they are to make them stop selling goods outright.
  • Try keeping a distance from followers when directing more than 2 to fight the same target, as followers can become hostile to one another in the event one follower accidentally hits another, becoming hostile to the player if they are in sight when this happens.
  • Oftentimes jokes alone will no be enough to give players a net positive popularity for the floor. Players going for election victories can counter this by killing or directing followers to kill annoyed NPCs.
    • Jokes can be told to NPCs in bars without risk of decreasing popularity by telling jokes to non-Bartender NPCs, then buying rounds for any NPCs you've annoyed with your jokes, making them friendly.
  • Non-Prisoner NPCs recruited after Joking them will not follow players beyond the floor they're recruited on unless possessing the Homesickness Killer trait. Additionally, they will leave the team if their health points get too low, much like hired Gangsters.
  • You can tell a Joke while moving and the NPCs will follow after you as you speak. This can be useful for putting distance between the NPCs and yourself in case the joke goes over poorly.
  • Occasionally, some NPCs will not listen to the joke; you can tell an NPC is listening if they turn or move toward you.
  • Cheap status items such as Cigarettes can be placed in an Air Filtration System to cause an evacuation of the building it belongs to. You can then use Joke on all the inhabitants without worrying about trespassing.
  • Be especially careful when telling jokes to aligned groups such as cops or soldiers. If a single NPC is turned hostile, the entire group will attack you.
