Backstory
"Starting from nothing the humble Slum Dweller is willing to rise up to do whatever it takes to make it in this crazy world. This typically involves beating up random people for their cash, and scouring trash barrels for bacon cheesburgers. A true personification of the American dream!"

The Slum Dweller is an NPC and playable character. They wear ragged brown clothes.

NPC[ | ]

Slum Dwellers are the most common NPC early floors. They mostly populate the streets of each floor, but can occasionally be found within houses, bars, banks, and other places of business. They can be recruited for $20 and asked to "Cause a Ruckus", which causes them to distract all nearby people for 8 seconds wherever the player desires. They will leave the party immediately after causing a ruckus.

If Slum Dwellers see Money on the ground they may pick it up.

Tips and Strategies[ | ]

  • How to fight: Slum dwellers have poor stats at the start so use whatever and whoever is available to make fights easier. Scout out objects or items you can use to your advantage before engaging in a large fight. As you gain levels and items, fighting becomes easier.
  • How to finish missions: Slum Dwellers often have to fight to complete missions at the start. If a mission looks too hard, try completing other missions first to gain XP and items. You may have to take serious risks to complete certain missions on early floors as you have no special abilities to fall back on and haven't yet leveled up enough, or found enough money, to be formidable.
  • The Slum Dweller's playstyle is focused around becoming better by gaining levels. Having Potential To Not Suck and Jack of Extra Trades means Slum Dwellers can get a lot more out of leveling up than most classes.
  • Super Studious gives you a +50% bonus to all XP you earn. Try to gain as much XP as possible to maximize level gains.
    • There are lots of different XP bonuses for completing missions and levels. For example, taking a stealthy approach to missions and killing guards afterward can earn you the Alerted No One and Killed No One XP bonuses while still allowing you to gain XP from kills. Not using guns, or weapons altogether, can earn you additional XP at the end of the floor, but may be very difficult.
    • Complete optional missions whenever possible for more XP.
    • Break as many objects as possible to earn Wanton Destruction for free XP. Just be careful about making the wrong person Hostile.
    • Use level-ups as a source of free healing - feel free to take risks when close to leveling up.
  • Try to spend exactly $50 on each floor towards the Big Quest, in order to gain the maximum XP. Spending more risks not being able to afford it on a later floor; not spending gives no XP for the floor's Big Quest.
  • Loadout-O-Matics can be used as makeshift vending machines, providing reasonably-priced Whiskey every floor to use as needed.

Trivia[ | ]

  • The Slum Dweller became a playable character in Alpha 13. Previously the Slum Dweller was an NPC in the earlier alpha builds. In very early builds, they were called hobos and accepted money donations.
    • When first made playable, had two traits, "Unlikable" and "No Followers" which were early versions of the traits Malodorous and Antisocial.
  • Out of all Characters, Slum Dwellers has the most dialogue and quotes along with Clerks and are one of the few characters who have Investigating dialogue, along with the Goon and Supergoon. They're the only character with combat dialogue.
